Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Europe Urged to Accelerate as China's Solar Boom Drives Record Renewable Growth

Last year saw a peak in global installations of renewable energy, with 92.5 percent of newly added electrical capacity originating from solar, wind, or similar sustainable power sources, according to a report by an international organization.

About 64 percent of the additional renewable electricity produced in 2024 came from China, as stated in Wednesday’s report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

In total, the global capacity for new renewable electrical power increased by 585 billion watts, marking a 15.1 percent rise compared to 2023 figures. This growth indicates that now 46 percent of the world’s electricity originates from solar, wind, and other sustainable, non-nuclear energy resources.

World still short of target to triple renewable energy

This significant increase still leaves the global community off course for achieving the international target of increasing renewables threefold between 2023 and 2030. According to calculations by IRENA, we are projected to fall short by about 28 percent.

The objective was established in 2023 as part of global initiatives aimed at mitigating the growing effects of climate change and shifting away from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.

Renewable energy Is marking the decline of the fossil fuel era. Rapid expansion is generating employment opportunities, reducing energy costs, and improving air quality," stated United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "However, the transition to renewable energy needs to accelerate and become more equitable.

China added almost 374 billion watts of renewable power - three-quarters of it from solar panels - in 2024. That's more than eight times as much as the United States did and five times what Europe added last year.

Currently, China boasts approximately 887 gigawatts of solar panel capacity, dwarfing the 176 gigawatts in the United States, almost 90 gigawatts in Germany, around 21 gigawatts in France, and over 17 gigawatts in the United Kingdom.

The UN climate leader urges Europe to keep pace with China.

The UN climate leader, Simon Stiell, presented these statistics on Wednesday to issue a challenge. Europe And other industrialized countries to close the gap with China.

“As one government retreats from climate leadership, it creates an opportunity for others to step forward and capture significant advantages,” Stiell told European leaders in Berlin, referring to US President Trump's actions. pulling out of the Paris climate accord .

The shift towards clean energy could become Europe's main driver of economic growth at this moment—when new avenues for expansion are crucial to maintain living standards and will remain so for many years.

Stiell stated that the IRENA figures indicate the "unstoppable global surge in renewable energy" and mentioned that the green energy sector amounted to $2 trillion (€1.9 trillion) globally last year.

Neil Grant, a senior policy analyst at Climate Analytics, which monitors and forecasts nations' actions against climate change, stated that the shift towards renewable energy could accelerate further.

"If renewable energy sources increased by 15 percent in 2024, imagine how significantly they might expand with robust, trustworthy, and ambitious global climate policies supporting them," stated Grant, who was not involved in the IRENA report.
