Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Girl, 13, Achieves Perfect Score on IQ Test With No Prep Time

A 13-year-old girl has been invited to join Mensa after getting the maximum score on the IQ test - higher than Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking .

Sofia Kot Arcuri has joined the club following her exceptional performance, scoring 162 points as the top result among girls her age, even though she did not prepare for the test.

Proud mother Cecylia Kot Arcuri, 36, said she always knew Sofia was smart.

A mother of three named Cecylia, who hails from Kings Hill, Kent, mentioned: "She excelled at the top of her class during primary school."

She achieved remarkably high scores on her 11 plus exam and easily secured a spot at a grammar school.

She simply wanders about bombarding you with miscellaneous pieces of information.

When you imagine an intellectually gifted person, you might picture them as being very nerdy; however, she's actually just your average girl.

She has plenty of friends, exudes positivity, and is adored by all.

I anticipated she would be at the pinnacle, but not as the absolute top; this was truly shocking for all of us.

Because of Sofia's heavy academic responsibilities, she didn't manage to prepare for the exam in January, nor had she practiced any Mensa tests before the significant date.

She got the results on 14 March.

Cecylia added: 'She was over the moon.

'I stood by the door filming her reaction as she opened the envelope. She's chuffed.'

Ambitious programmer Sofia leads her class in computer science and aims to make a career out of it as she matures.

Cecylia said: 'She came home one day and said, 'there was a bug the teacher didn't even know how to solve and I did it'.

'She's also a ballet dancer and performs in shows with her dance school.

She adores musical theater and can often be found at the keyboard.

Sofia's schoolmates were thrilled with the outcome and initially 'couldn't believe it was true.'

Sofia mentioned, "I felt quite nervous taking the exam, as the structure seemed unusual."

'I felt genuinely delighted when I discovered the news.'

Given that her mother Cecylia works as a financial controller for one of her clients in her role as a virtual assistant, it’s clear that maths and figures are deeply ingrained in Sofia's heritage.

She stated: "My father, her grandpa Antoni Kot—a principal and mathematics educator—was quite renowned in our region of Poland. He continued to tutor students right up until his passing at 86 years old in 2023."

Even in his final moments, his mind remained acute, and we think Sofia acquired her passion for mathematics and coding from him.
