Michael Olunga's Powerful Message to Kenya Before Gabon Showdown
- Michael Olunga wishes for large crowds of Kenyan supporters to attend as Harambee Stars plays against Gabon on Sunday, March 23rd.
- Kenya enters the match following a thrilling 3-3 tie with Gambia on Thursday, courtesy of an equalizer at the death.
- The Harambee Stars' most recent home match was in 2021 against Rwanda, and they will require the backing of their supporters to defeat Gabon this time around.
Michael Olunga has conveyed a message to the supporters before Harambee Stars face off against Gabon on Sunday in the World Cup qualifying matches.
After the Kenyan squad arrived back home from Ivory Coast following an exciting 3-3 tie against Gambia, Olunga made his comments.
What message did Olunga convey to Kenyans?
Kenya were close to losing the game to the Gambia but William Lenkupae scored a last-gasp equaliser to rescue a hard-fought point for Harambee Stars.
Olunga converted the opening penalty before Mohammed Bajaber added an impressive goal. In between, Yankuba Minteh found the back of the net with his effort being nestled between Musa Barrow’s two goals.
Kenya’s prospects were dimmed as they remained in fourth place in Group F with just six points, placing them six points behind their upcoming rivals on Sunday. Consequently, they must secure victories in their remaining matches if they hope to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
"The team fought hard, they showed character coming from two goals down and fighting until the last minute to get the equaliser," Olunga said per FKF.
Gather in big crowds to cheer for the team. This matters greatly as we are competing at our home ground for the first time in four years. You can count on us to put up an impressive performance.
Kenya lost to Gabon in the first leg and the fans could be a factor against the team led by veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Can Kenya take down Gabon?
The Harambee Stars performed impressively in the opening period against The Gambia but faltered due to errors.
Ian Otieno, the goalkeeper, conceded a penalty but managed to save it, whereas Olunga failed to capitalize on a clear headed chance.
Benni McCarthy wasn’t satisfied with certain aspects of his team’s performance, yet he appreciated their battling attitude.
"Highly stressed and not pleased. However, for those who remained impartial, it was quite an engaging experience with many objectives achieved, which isn’t typically witnessed during World Cup qualifying matches," McCarthy stated according to FKF.
The optimism I witnessed fills me with hope that we can surpass what we achieved today. Although facing Gabon will be challenging, we will have the backing of all Kenyans."
The last time Kenya played at home was in 2021 when they faced Rwanda in the World Cup qualifiers. Due to the absence of a FIFA-approved stadium, these games had to be held elsewhere.
For example, Kenya competed in three matches at neutral venues during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The team aims to secure their second victory with the backing of their supporters.
Bajaber responds after netting a remarkable goal
NewsBlog.co.ke Earlier reports indicated that Mohammed Bajaber celebrated after scoring an impressive goal for Harambee Stars.
After landing back in Kenya with the national team following their match against The Gambia, the Kenya Police midfield player shared his thoughts.
