Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Kidnappers Murder Hostage in Front of Family: Tragic Tale Spreads Worldwide

Godwin Anuka, a man who was abducted along with his spouse and two offspring by alleged Fulani herdsmen in the Ubulu-Uku region of Delta State, was murdered before the eyes of his family.

The Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and Youth Mobilisation to the Delta State Governor, Harrison Gwamnishu, disclosed this in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Gwamnishu noted that the kidnappers had abducted two persons on March 23 and taken them into the bush while demanding ransom.

He observed that as the kidnappers hid in the bushes with the two kidnapped individuals, they noticed Anuka along with his spouse and their two minor children tending to their farm work.

The SSA noted that the kidnappers proceeded to abduct Anuka and his family and began demanding ransom.

Gwamnishu stated, "On March 29, 2025, Mr. Godwin Anuka, along with his spouse and two minor children, was abducted from their farm located in Ubulu-Uku, Delta State. The perpetrators behind this egregious act are the same group of five heavily armed Fulani kidnappers responsible for previous such offenses."

“They kidnapped Chibueze from Ogwashi-Uku, trekked to Ubulu-Uku, and kidnapped Mr Afam. They trekked, crossed the Isah Ogwashi/Ubulu-Uku road to Power Line, and headed to a farm road towards Ani-Uje Ubulu-Uku, where they camped for days and started calling for ransom.

“It was where they camped that they saw Mr Godwin and his family and kidnapped all of them.”

He revealed that the head of the local administration called in military personnel for a rescue mission. However, following the payment of a ransom, the captors freed several hostages; unfortunately, it was reported that Anuka was killed by gunfire in front of his family.

He stated, "The Central Vigilante group of Ubulu-Uku and the Nigerian Army deployed at the behest of Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, who serves as the chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, along with representatives from the Ubulu-Uku Palace, attempted to save them."

Yesterday, following the payment of a substantial ransom, the kidnappers freed Chibueze, Mr. Afam, Mrs. Godwin—who passed away recently—and their two children. We also learned that Mr. Godwin was shot and killed at his farm, with both his wife and children witnessing the incident.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, proved abortive as he had yet to respond to calls and messages at the time of filing this report.

PUNCH Metro reported on March 28 that Gwamnishu decried the rise in kidnappings in some parts of the state allegedly perpetrated by some Fulani herders.

Gwamnishu revealed this information while citing the case of a deceased female land agent, Esther Osaze, whose body was discovered several days following her abduction.

While expressing sadness over Esther’s death, the SSA noted that some of the victims were still in the kidnappers’ den because their families could not pay the requested ransom.
