HARARE, May 21 (NewsBlogLive)—The Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) has voiced worry about the increasing volume of unchecked reports released by journalists taking advantage of the rise of social media platforms.
The emergence of social media has ignited rivalry among writers to be the first to break news, pushing rumor spreaders pretending to be reporters to hastily publish unverified information.
During a fact-checking training session in Harare, Lifaqane Nare from FactCheckZw urged journalists to ensure they verify information before publishing to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The distinction between a journalist and a rumormonger lies in their capacity to validate the information they disseminate.
“Everyone can get information but it takes a journalists to get facts. If you do not conduct research and verify the information you disseminate, you are not a journalist but a reporter", Nare said.
The training focused on the understanding of the landscape of misinformation, and fact checking tools and the participants did exercises on verification tools and shared the challenges they encountered during the exercise.
Fungisai Sithole of FNF emphasized the importance for reporters to uphold and protect the truth.
" With the high rate of misinformation, disinformation and propaganda shared on digital platforms, journalists have a role to play in the fight against information disorders.
"Defending the truth and safeguarding democracy are responsibilities journalists must uphold," Sithole stated.
Farai Magada, a broadcaster who took part in the program, emphasized that the fact-checking training enabled her to grasp the significance of verifying information prior to disseminating stories.
