Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Kendrick Lamar Shatters Historic Billboard Record in International Edition (English)

Kendrick Lamar has etched his name into the annals of musical history, with his popular track "Not Like Us" becoming the first hip-hop song to spend 53 non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This achievement took place in Pakistan on May 25.

At present ranked at position 23, Kendrick Lamar’s track continues to hold a remarkable spot, maintaining its strength across nine distinct US Billboard charts due to its ongoing popularity on streaming services and frequent airplay on radios. This accomplishment marks a new high point for Kendrick Lamar, surpassing his earlier record held by "Love," which stayed on the Hot 100 chart for 40 weeks. Now overtaken by “Not Like Us,” this song has garnered significant attention from listeners for more than a year. Additionally, the influence of the track extended beyond just the music charts; it earned recognition at the Grammy Awards, securing wins for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories.

This isn't Lamar's only triumph this year. His collaboration with SZA, Luther, has held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for an impressive 13 weeks.

This achievement ranks it among just 14 songs in the chart’s history to accomplish such a streak. Kendrick Lamar stands out for his unmatched capability to merge mainstream popularity with high artistic praise within the hip-hop industry. This prowess extends beyond recorded music into live performances as well. The Grand National Tour he embarked on alongside SZA began in Minneapolis during April, attracting roughly 50,000 attendees.

At an average ticket price of approximately $193, the event raked in over $9 million, establishing a fresh benchmark for one-night rap concert revenues.

The Kendrick Lamar concert series will proceed through key U.S. urban centers such as Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C., prior to extending its reach into Europe come July.

The tour stops will encompass Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, before culminating with a headlining performance at Australia’s Split Milk festival in December.

Even as years go by, "Not Like Us" demonstrates no signs of deceleration. Featuring robust sales, increasing stream counts, and consistent radio play, Kendrick Lamar keeps showcasing his dominance within contemporary hip-hop.
